Ep. 0130: CJ’s 25 Favorite Antiwar Songs
Encompassing a variety of musical genres & a variety of wars, here they are, CJ’s favorite 25 antiwar songs.
Links below on the song titles are to CJ’s favorite version that’s available on Youtube of each song. Some are versions by the original artist, and some are covers that CJ actually likes a little better than the originals.
Join CJ as he discusses:
- “With God on Our Side” by Bob Dylan
- “I Ain’t Marching Anymore” by Phil Ochs
- “The Rain” by Scott Miller
- “Lone Pine Hill” by Justin Townes Earle
- “River Runs Red” by The SteelDrivers (excellent live version)
- “Christmas in the Trenches” by John McCutcheon
- “Green Fields of France”/’No Man’s Land”/”Willie McBride” by Eric Bogle (link is to the Dropkick Murphy’s cover of the song)
- “One” by Metallica (link is to the excellent music video, from back in the days when MTV still played music videos)
- “Goodbye Blue Sky” by Pink Floyd (link is to the excellent video accompanying the song from Pink Floyd’s film The Wall)
- “The War” by Lucero (CJ likes this live cut better than the original studio cut)
- “Fortunate Son” by Creedence Clearwater Revival
- “Big Time in the Jungle” by Old Crow Medicine Show
- “Rooster” by Alice in Chains (link is to music video, which includes a lot of Vietnam imagery)
- “War” by Edwin Starr
- “The Star Spangled Banner” by Jimi Hendrix
- “Hammer to Fall” by Queen
- “Eve of Destruction” by Barry McGuire (CJ’s favorite version is this punk rock cover by D.O.A.)
- “Tell Me Why” by Three Bad Jacks
- “Another Man’s Cause” by The Levellers
- “Home to Houston” by Steve Earle
- “Southeastern Son” by Turnpike Troubadours
- “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath
- “Lucky Man” by Emerson, Lake & Palmer (I love the album version too, but this live one is haunting — Greg Lake belts it out, sans cheesy synth riffs!)
- “What’s Left of the Flag” by Flogging Molly (the album version is great, but I linked to a live version at Warped Tour because Flogging Molly is such an awesome live band & I saw them for the first time at Warped Tour probably around 15 years ago)
- “The General” by Dispatch
Or listen to them all in a row as a playlist (thanks to listener Jon for slapping that together.)
